Imbolc ~ Turning towards Spring

Imbolc is an ancient Gaelic word for the festival celebrated around the world on the 1st of February. It marks the midpoint between the Winter Solstice and the Spring Equinox. It is when the Mother Earth starts to stir the new possibility of Spring and it’s name means “in the belly”, as it refers to the “just-showing” pregnancy or a stirring of new life that has just begin. It brings us a sense of renewal and rebirth. Cultures around the world celebrate this cross quarter day with ritual and celebration in many different ways. In Ireland the Celtic people associate the season with the goddess Brigid, also spelled Brigit, Bride, or Brighid. She is a triple goddess, the patroness of fire, fertility, poetry, and healing. On Imbolc, many people will leave offerings to Brigid outside their home, such as flowers, coins, or grain. Some will even leave a special poem or song for her. Imbolc is also a time for reflection and renewed energy.

While many of the traditional celebrations of Imbolc have been lost to time, there are still many ways to honor this important holiday. One of the most popular traditions of Imbolc is the lighting of candles. Many cultures believe that the light of these candles will bring warmth and hope to the coming spring. Some people will place a wreath on the door to their home to welcome in the new season. Others will hang bunches of evergreens from the ceiling, or hang a special banner outside their home. Another common tradition of Imbolc is the making of Brigid’s crosses. These crosses, made from pieces of straw, are believed to bring protection and good luck to the home. These are really fun, I make them every year. You can find easy tutorials on YouTube by searching how to make Brigid's crosses.

Brigid’s Cross

To honor this turning point in the season, you can time to meditate or perform rituals that honor the coming of Spring. This could include something as simple as taking a walk in nature, or something more elaborate like a ritual bath. Light some candles, create an altar, maybe even get crafty and make a Brigid cross! Imbolc is a time to celebrate the moments of renewal and rebirth that come with the changing of the seasons. Enjoy honoring this transition point so you may feel renewed and excited for what is on it’s way into your life!
